We have experienced an unprecedented interest in abseil events over the last 12 months. We can only guess as to why that might be? Abseils are a scary and challenging activity.
Nevertheless, they provide a relatively straight forward way for people to raise money and interest. Perhaps it is because this activity has featured on many prominent TV shows that showcase adventure, survival and exploration?
The year began with 8.2 providing the management of an abseil event for 2 people and ending the year in the same way. In March the CEOs of the Meadowhall Shopping centre and the children’s charity Blue Bell Wood completed an abseil from the roof of the centre. This was the first abseil at this venue. Both participants were generous with their time and had to be patient because of the amount of photographs that they were required to poise for.
In November 2 presenters from BBC Look North completed an abseil from Sheffield Hallam University. They were required to be even more patient as they were filmed by cameras on their person, from Drones and TV cameras. They were both good company and raised a lot of money throughout their week of fundraising for Children In Need.
In April we completed another first for us; an abseil event at Birmingham International to raise money for Acorns. Undeterred by the appalling weather conditions the staff from Diamond House turned out in good numbers. This is an excellent venue as it overlooks the runway and the staff group we worked with to make the event happen were very professional.
2016 marked the 150th year of Barnardo’s. As part of the celebrations we completed a series of abseil events on their behalf. The huge CLV building in Leeds, the iconic Coventry Cathedral and the famous Intu Trafford Centre all proved to be good fundraising events; relaxed, professional and accommodating. The organisation of these events amongst so many other celebrations involved us working closely with Barnardo’s staff which turned out to be a privilege.
Our work with the British Red Cross has increased this year. All 3 events raised a lot of money for this charity. Working alongside such well organised and motivated charity staff is always a pleasure. The venues we used were all outstanding.
We completed an event with Carillion PLC at the Royal Bank of Scotland situated in the Bradley Place area of Birmingham. They were raising money for a charity involved with Military Veterans. We all had to complete a complicated set of problems to make the abseil happen, but happen it did and with a lot of success.
As part of the Cliffhanger event here in Sheffield, we organised an abseil on behalf of Cavendish Cancer Care. Despite the very wet weather the event was successful and took place right in the middle of this annual event that is increasing in size every year.
Both of our Open events went very well; we have used Walsall Arts Centre for many years. We had 50+ participants all raising money for a variety of charities. The venue is booked again for July 2017 and people are already booked on. Much the same can be said for the Intu Trafford Centre. 2016 was our 11th year. They remain extremely accommodating and helpful. We all like working with this group and hope the event will continue to remain popular. We had 350+ participants in 2016 who raised 10s of thousands of pounds for 15 charities, in perfect weather. It is booked again for September 2017.
